Especially in the age of digital photography, every click creates an image, and every photo you compose takes us to the next step of endurance. Many professional and seasoned nature photographers will tell you all about the mistakes that they’ve made, and how it trained them into better photographers. Mistakes are a part of the progress we make when it comes to photography. Knowing what to look out for will help to prepare you.

The mistakes that you make while taking pictures are not as critical as the way that you learn from the mistakes. In many ways, trial and error can be your most influential teacher in learning how to take the best shot. Having an idea of what to look for when you’re making your picture and potential mistakes will prepare you to be a better photographer in the future.

Adjusting Your Shot

Some mistakes, like composition, can be a simple matter of repositioning yourself and creating the best image. For example, a classic photography mistake would be to have a tree or a building or some other object(most often people too!!) directly behind the head. Try shifting your position, to avoid the situation. Sometime you may be lucky because you choose to change your position.

Lighting and Composition

Another common mistake would be the understanding of lighting before clicking the shutter button. If the aperture isn’t adjusted appropriately, then there can be too little or too much light. It is a mistake that even seasoned photographers make. This mistake is easy to remedy; you learn from it. Don’t get embarrassed; it is part of your learning.

Image Files type

Sometimes, you might accidentally shoot in JPG when you thought you were shooting in RAW – it happened to me a bunch of times! It is a most occurring mistake, and it is also a learning curve which you will graduate from. Ultimately, you will get better at it — next time, and you will make sure your settings are double verified before clicking.

Equipment

Have you ever taken your camera out to take pictures, but realize you’ve forgotten your memory card? It is a lesson to have a photo bag, and maybe even extra memory cards. Even though you might not be able to take pictures at the moment, you probably won’t let that happen again in the future. ( A friend of mine always keeps an extra memory card tied to his camera strap! Not a bad idea isn’t it! ).

Another good example is not charging batteries and running out of charge when you’re at the right time and the right place. Well, now you will learn to keep the backup or charge the battery beforehand. Also, plan your next trip way ahead of time- trust me helps you a lot!

If your camera has a removable lens, you might see that it’s not suited for the shot that you’re trying to make (Again, plan your trip). If you are going to work with a new lens that you just bought and went straight ahead to shoot without practicing. Somewhere along the line, you will have a little challenge getting along with your new lens. So, Practice a bunch of time before the next trip so that you are well prepared.

Sometimes it is just not your photography gear, there are other things. What if you drop your camera? Or exposed to rain? or didn’t care much while you are shooting on the ocean side? Learn to get a strap and a waterproof bag. Even trash-bag works – handy and light-weight to carry around. By the way, I learned all these in a hard way!

A little bit of planning will help you in the future to take more explicit shots. Study your equipment and gears; spend some quality time with your gear and learn nitty-gritty to be the best photographer possible and to be prepared in the future.

Don’t Be Afraid To Make Mistakes!

When you’re taking pictures, be brave, break the rules ( you are allowed in photography LOL!) Even if you’ve made a million mistakes, you are still doing plenty right, and you can create amazing images that make rewarding pictures. In the long run, you will appreciate all of the time that you spent taking pictures, and even if you don’t hit the mark every time, you can potentially get a great shot.

Modern cameras have plenty of built-in features that help you avoid making many mistakes that photographers in the past had to avoid. So, the most crucial part is to get out there and take pictures.
