The Color of the Stream

The Color of the Stream was photographed in Willard Brooke State Forest in Massachusetts. The autumnal colors are in full force in the picture; the trees above the waterfall are a deep red, and the ambient light polishes the tiny leaves into fiery gemstones. Sharing a viewpoint with “Calm Flow”, this particular iteration makes use of a longer exposure time, transforming the water into something soft and almost gaseous. In front of the soft white water, the sharpness of the rocks is immediately thrown into focus, drawing us to the glittering reds and oranges of the tiny fall leaves that carpet the rocks leading down to the water.

Willard Brooke State Forest stretches over nearly 3000 acres of land near Townsend, and invites visitors to camp, hike, and ski in a protected area of natural beauty.

This little nook in the forest feels like a haven of some sort, a secret gem that nobody knows about, untouched by human hands. Lichen and moss pockmarks the rocks and they glimmer with moisture; the air is humid and the flowing water is likely flicking up droplets and mist as it falls from the level above.

Fall is the ideal time to visit, with a bounty of deciduous trees that turn into a cacophony of fiery colors. The forest is dense and seems to resemble the forests typically found further West in the state, with quick moving water and the look of a Classic New England woods.

Above all, this is an image of comfort. The environment seems enclosed, almost cocooned against the elements with high rocks and trees shielding you from the open expanses. There is no horizon, and it focuses on the more earthly wonders of burbling water, the beauty of fallen leaves and escaping from our troubles. This print would be a perfect fit for a space that serves as an escape. A TV room, a meditative space or perhaps even an office that needs an organic hint of the natural world to soften those hard man-made lines.
