Surveillance is an elegant photograph of an African leopard, looking across a watering hole.
The animal is alert and locking eyes with my camera, and its body is picked out in spectacular detail against almost complete darkness.
Despite the bright flash of the camera the leopards looks soft and smooth, almost like a perfect figurine standing on the edge of the waterfront. The tail hangs in a gentle arc.
I took this photograph during the night time and this leopard was extremely cautious, consistently evading the camera. Eventually, after circling the watering hole several times and coming to a stop, it settled down for just long enough for me to capture it.
Leopards are born without spots, but they quickly develop over the first few days of their lives. They can adapt to almost any environment and they thrive in woodlands, savannas, coastal shrub and even rainforests, perhaps owing to that versatile camouflage.
Against the inky black the animal is startlingly vibrant. In contrast to the daytime where It would become invisible against the grass, here at night it shines brightly. The tones shift from bright orange to white to a cool blue in the shadows. The patterning takes on an almost psychedelic quality. With no background to speak of, we are drawn to the delicate shapes that make up the pattern. Not spots but “rosettes”, gently shifting shapes like black ink blots punctuated by brown. The most complex shapes cover its back, and shrink into tiny black dabs along its neck and down its legs.
Surveillance is a striking portrait of one of Africa’s most fearsome and beautiful big cats, and the night time setting gives it a cinematic feel that would add drama and character to any space.
